Condition: Craquelure, scattered retouch, minor paint loss, soil. Note: This work on an early canvas and stretcher appears to be a copy of the portrait of Benjamin Franklin painted by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725-1805) in 1777 while Franklin was living in France and serving as ambassador from 1776 to 1785. It is believed that this copy was made shortly after Franklin's return to America in 1785.
